Government of Canada to help seniors participate more fully in their communities, Government of Canada
The announcement was made for the funding of 44 projects under the New Horizons for Seniors Program that will ensure seniors in Saskatchewan have the opportunity to take an active role in their communities. One of the projects, Walk Side Nature Program, will give the chance for youths and seniors to design and develop two urban conservation trails. Almost $25,000 of the total $598,959 funding will be dedicated to this specific project.
In the 2007 Budget, $10 million per year is dedicated to two new additions of the New Horizons for Seniors Program. The new additions will bring awareness to elder abuse and capital assistance for upgrades to facilities and equipment that is currently used for senior programs. In the spring of this year, specific projects funded under these new additions will be announced. For a detailed list of funded projects click on the following link.

Amenities on Movers’ Wish-lists
Don’t automatically assume that those aged 50-plus want to downsize. An ERA study of that age group found that of the one in five thinking about moving in the next five years, 65% would consider a single family home. About one-quarter of survey respondents said that the reason they would buy a new home would be to upsize. Of those who own single family homes, only 11% would consider moving to a condo, townhouse or apartment. Keep in mind the amenities that top their wish-lists. Among them are a designer kitchen, an outdoor deck and entertainment space, an indoor sauna or hot tub, and a home theater. Only 13% would want to have a home on a golf course.
Fall Prevention
Amazingly simple home alterations, such as removing throw rugs or securing them to the floor with double-sided tape and brightening lights, can prevent falls—the leading cause of injury and death among older adults. Find additional tips and a copy about fall prevention to share with your parents.

Top Retirement Destinations In The USA
When it comes to the most popular retirement spots, you know many of the usual warm-weather suspects. In fact, a recent Harris Poll confirms that California, Florida, Hawaii, North Carolina, and Oregon are the most popular places that those aged 62-plus would choose to live. Even if you don’t practice real estate in those hotspots, be prepared for an influx of retirees. Earlier this year, Bizjournals.com did a comprehensive report on the hottest retirement destinations and found some surprising results. Urban destinations making the top-ten list included Portland, Maine; Youngstown, Ohio; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Knoxville, Tennessee. Top small-town destinations included Gardnerville Ranchos, Nevada, Pahrump, Nevada, Del Rio, Texas, Brevard, North Carolina, and Ocean Pines, Maryland.
